1999 Named ‘Australian Legend’ by Australia Post. Dies in April
1995 Australian of the Year
1993-94 Major retrospective, AGNSW, Sydney
1993 Made a gift to the nation of Riversdale and Bundanon. AGNSW mounted amajor retrospective of his work: paintings, prints, drawings and ceramics, which toured the country in 1994
1989-90 lived & worked in United Kingdom
1988 Represented Australia at 43rd Venice Biennale
1979 Awarded the Order of Australia (AO) for services to art
1975 Presented several thousand works to NGA
1971 Returned to Australia as Artist in Residence at ANU. Soon after this, he and his wife purchased Riversdale at Shoalhaven and Bundanon
1966 Started Nebuchadnezzar paintings
1959 Moved to London, exhibited with great success particularly at WhitechapelGallery, and soon became one of Australia's most highly regarded artists
1945 Exhibited with Contemporary Art Society in Melbourne and Sydney
1941 Conscripted into the army. Met influential peers such as John Perceval, Noel Counihan, Joy Hester, Albert Tucker, Sidney Nolan, John and Sunday Reed
